Marquita Williams

LAKELAND -- Ms. Marquita "Nikki" Nicole Williams of Lakeland, a theater student at Florida Southern College who approached life with exuberance and caring for others, died of cancer Monday (May 3, 2004) at Orlando Regional Medical Center. She was 20.

Ms. Williams was entering her senior year at Florida Southern and her goal was to one day act in movies, her father, Dr. Alonzo Williams Jr., said.

She loved her studies, her father said. Besides majoring in theater, she planned to minor in foreign language with a focus on Spanish.

Her father recalled how he taught her to play the piano and he said she had a beautiful singing voice.

She was a member of the Florida Southern Gospel Choir, the Florida Southern Theater Department and the Abundant Life Church of God in Lakeland.

Her motto was "Live life to the fullest," her dad said.

Her father said that while going through treatments for cancer, his daughter would comfort other patients.

"She cared about the hearts of other people," Dr. Williams said. "She always had a comforting word."

In addition to her father, Ms. Williams is survived by her mother, Tangela Flournoy-Williams, Lakeland; paternal grandmother, Genetha McGee, Madison; maternal grandmother, Louise Tucker, Tampa; brother, Trae Williams, Lakeland; and sister, Brittney Coleman, Lakeland.

Services were at Abundant Life Church of God.
